Nowadays

What about Fujimori in the last years?

Without a shadow of a doubt, the period in which President Fujimori was in power is a period that is remembered with suffering by the victims and by all those who have in some way been affected by his policy.

In 2000, Alberto Fujimori, still President in charge, decided to stand for elections. His election campaign was not at all fair while it was aimed at minimizing his opponent, Alejandro Toledo.

While he was becoming President for the Third time, in the country it become known a scandal of corruption about his Government. New elections were called and Fujimori took advantages of them to go to Japan, where he decided to exile and sent his resignation, for fear of being judged for corruption but also for the crimes committed against humanity during his mandate. His resignation has been rejected and as soon as Alejandro Toledo become the new President, he fought for justice and for Fujimori’s arrest. As the new President was his old political enemy, Fujimori always denied his faults and affirmed that he was accused unfairly for political reasons.

“Si se cometieron algunos hechos execrables los condeno, pero no fueron orden de quien habla.”

On the 7th Nov. 2005, Fujimori left his refuge in Japan, a country of which he is a citizen because of his Japanese ancestry, and suddenly arrived in Santiago de Chile, after 7 years of being on the run,  where he was preventively detained while the Peruvian government initiated extradition proceedings.

Finally, in 2009 Lima’s Supreme Court of Justice charged with 25 years Fujimori that faced a  "mega trial" for the Barrios Altos massacres in 1991 and La Cantuta in 1992, in which 25 people, including a child, were extrajudicially executed by a military group on suspicion of belonging to the guerrillas.

Peruvian law states that a person convicted of murder or kidnapping cannot receive presidential mercy unless he is terminally ill. Three previous requests for pardon from Fujimori starting in 2013 had been rejected after doctors had determined that the former president is not ill incurable but finally in 2007 the President Kuczynski has signed the humanitarian pardon for health reasons for him. But the freedom, didn’t last too much as just some months later, a judge of the Lima Supreme Court has ordered the re-arrest of the former president, deciding that he should return to prison pending trial and to serve the remaining years of his sentence, declaring null and void the pardon granted by Kuczynski. The former President appealed against the decision and in 2019 a pre-trial detention order was issued in prison awaiting trial. On 13 February, the Supreme Court rejected Fujimori's appeal against the annulment of the pardon.

While it seems that Alberto’s Fujimori’s chapter in Perù ended, his name still present in the country. Keiko Fujimori, his daughter, is the leader of the main opposition party in the Peruvian parliament (Fuerza Popular). She was arrested in 2018 on charges of illegal financing and money laundering while her three brothers, Kenji Hiro and Sachi were accused of misappropriating public money for the payment of their studies abroad, while between July 2009 and the end of 2014 Kenji and Hiro were investigated for the illegal money laundering used in that period for the establishment of 21 companies.

Nowadays the political crisis in Perù is still on and the country keeps paying the faults made in the past even if the consciousness of the people didn’t seem to be awake as the fujimorists currently hold the majority in Parliament.
